1935 Austin Seven Ruby – “Ruby Rose” £6450 There’s something rather charming about a pre-war Austin, and this one – affectionately known as Ruby Rose – has become a bit of a favourite in the current collection. She’s been gently improved over time, with a respectful nod to originality but with just enough modern touches to make her usable and enjoyable. The result is a delightfully characterful little motor that still knows how to make an entrance. The upholstery’s all been freshly done – including the headlining, door cards, and a new carpet set – so she looks as smart inside as she does out. Mechanically she’s had plenty of attention: an SU fuel pump, discreet independent indicators for safer driving, a new head gasket, fresh brakes all round, updated fuel system, and a gearbox that’s tight and confident. She starts with ease, ticks over nicely, and feels planted and eager on the road (within her vintage limits, of course – she’s no sprinter, but she keeps up well). New wheels and tyres give peace of mind without taking anything away from the car’s classic charm. All in all, it’s the sort of car that makes people smile – including the driver. It’s been cherished, named, and loved. Not many classics carry that sort of sentiment with such grace. Ideal for the gentleman who fancies something with real presence, something with a story – something that doesn’t need polishing every Sunday but deserves to be shown off all the same.
